High Seas Nursery Reveal

After working on this project for a while and admittedly finishing it months ago, I’m happy to share the finished project. If you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably seen a couple of sneak peeks but now you can see it in all it’s nautical inspired glory.

The client didn’t have a specific direction they wanted to go in, but I was armed with some likes and dislikes and a budget so I presented them with a few very different options. The only thing I needed to work in was the crib that they already had. They liked all the design boards for different reasons but ultimately chose the High Seas design, over the Happy Sunshine and the Safari Lodge design (which was my personal fav).

I like taking a theme and pulling elements from it so the room is inspired by the idea of the theme without being punched in the face with it. I pulled colors of the water to use in the room which you can see in the navy and aqua found throughout.

One thing I knew I wanted in here was a vintage flag to go above the crib. I needed to find something in this colorway and let me tell you I struck out more times than I care to admit. Oh I found a couple beauties but they came with a price tag that that instantly ruled them out. I couldn’t find something that was just right, so finally I gave up the search and made exactly what I wanted. This was a big deal because I have approximately zero sewing skills. It was surprisingly straightforward.

There are actually a few DIY’s in this room that I am quite proud of, including the ottoman cover and the curtain rod.

The walls got a gorgeous framed print from Minted, the flag and a beautiful round wooden mirror reminiscent of a porthole. Otherwise I tried to work in as much pretty function as possible with the captains wheel hooks, the boat cleat hat hooks and the little book racks.

When designing a nursery it’s important to me that the parents are comfortable and that the room is one the baby can grow with rather than out of. I love repeat clients, but I’d rather redesign a space because their taste has evolved or because they’ve moved, not because we gave their kid a baby room that they hate by the time they’re 4. If you swapped the crib for a bed would it still work? In this case I’d say absolutely. With that being said, I think it’s important to add some fun and whimsy in less permanent ways.
